Waivers can make a UMass Amherst education more affordable for qualifying students by reducing class fees. Check the waivers listed below for specific requirements and restrictions.

General waiver requirements:

  • Waivers cannot be applied after you register for a class.
  • Waivers must be submitted to the Continuing & Professional Education (CPE) office. Waivers submitted to the University Bursar's office cannot be used for CPE classes.
  • If you’re using a waiver, you must submit your authorized waiver form by mail, by fax, or in person with your registration. Waivers cannot be accepted online or over the phone.
  • Waivers usually apply to class fees only. Additional fees, such as registration, or curriculum fees, as well as the balance of class fees not covered by the waiver, are the responsibility of the student. They may be paid at time of registration or billed through the Bursar's Office. For more information on payment of fees click here.

State Tuition Remission For Eligible Massachusetts State Employees

A 50% reduction of class fees after the minimum number of full-paying students have enrolled in a class for full time employees (25% reduction for part-time employees). Contact your Human Resources department for additional information and a tuition remission form.

Restrictions:

  • Waiver cannot be applied after you register for a class.
  • Waiver does not cover the credit recording fee.

Massachusetts National Guard Welcome Home Bill

For active duty MA National Guard members enrolled in an eligible degree program. A Certificate of Eligibility from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Military Division is required at registration.

Categorical Tuition Waiver

100% reduction of class fees (non-CPE classes only) for:

  • veterans
  • Native Americans
  • senior citizens
  • active members of the armed forces stationed and residing in Massachusetts (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force or National Guard)
  • adopted children
  • foster children
  • Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission (MRC)

Restrictions:

  • You must provide sufficient documentation.
  • Waivers apply only to university scheduled classes that are state supported. They CANNOT be used for classes that are not state supported. Non state supported classes include fall and spring term classes offered through Continuing & Professional Education, and all summer and winter session classes.
  • Waivers cannot be applied retroactively.
  • Waivers do not cover registration and other fees.
  • Waivers do not cover independent study, thesis, dissertation or internship credit.

Cooperating Teachers Waiver

Not accepted for Continuing & Professional Education courses.

Waivers for UMass Amherst Graduate Assistants and Fellowship Recipients

Not accepted for Continuing & Professional Education classes.
